Regions: Libya / Algeria / Egypt / Morocco / Tunisia
Researcher Profile
Since entering university, I have been interested in the history of the Levant region (Syria, Lebanon, Palestine/Israel, Jordan) — often described as a kaleidoscope of religions. In particular, I became drawn to the transformation of religion and society since the 19th century as the deep source of the turmoil that continues in the modern Levant. As my research progressed, my interest shifted to Muhammad Ali, the "father of modern Egypt," who dominated the Levant in the 1830s and brought sweeping changes to local politics and society; I went on to study his rule over the Levant in graduate school. After obtaining my doctorate in 2025, I shifted my focus to Egypt under the Muhammad Ali dynasty, and am now researching the spread of political and social institutions across North Africa and the Middle East in the modern era, as well as developments in transportation and communication, using modernisation and colonisation as organising concepts.
I joined the Japan Institute of Energy Economics in April 2026 and am conducting research and analysis on the politics, economics, and energy of Libya and other North African countries. I aim to leverage my previous career to offer substantive analysis that also draws on historical, cultural, and religious knowledge. I have taught courses on the history, culture, and religion of the Middle East at Gunma Prefectural Women's University, Hosei University, Niigata Prefectural University, and Seikei University, continually updating both my knowledge and my presentation skills.
