Regions: Saudi Arabia / Kuwait / Bahrain
Researcher Profile
In middle school, I read the World Statistics Yearbook and the Data Book of the World, which sparked my interest in global politics and economics. Following news of the Egyptian protests in 2000 and the 9/11 terrorist attacks the following year, my interest was particularly drawn to the Middle East. In graduate school, I initially wanted to research the Palestinian question, but I was influenced by the fact that my first study-abroad destination in the Middle East was Kuwait, as well as by the prevalence of diplomatic history research at my graduate school, and I settled on Kuwaiti diplomacy during the first oil crisis as my research theme. I subsequently shifted my research focus to Saudi Arabia, the most influential country among the Gulf states.
After joining JIME Center in January 2016, I have conducted broad research on the politics, economics, and energy trends and policies of Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries. In 2022, I was seconded for six months to the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) in Saudi Arabia, deepening my understanding of the country's energy and environmental trends and policies.
