Researcher Profile
I studied modern Iranian history in graduate school, and after completing a two-year period of study in Iran, I worked as a freelancer in Iran for about four years, engaged in education, translation, and writing.
For me, thinking about Iran means thinking about what a state is, what religion is, what history is, and ultimately what human beings are. I believe Iran is a country that, the more you come to know it, the more it raises universal questions about Japan and the world at large.
Present-day Iran is said to be based on the doctrine of Shia Islam, but before the 1979 revolution there was an era in which it aspired to become a secular modern state; going further back in history, there were periods when Sunni Islam was dominant, and further still, an ancient Persian era when Zoroastrianism was professed.
The advanced scholarship and rich literature and arts cultivated through this layered history form a wellspring of ethnic pride and identity for Iranians living today. It is my view that this historical complexity and proud national character exert an undeniable influence on contemporary Iranian politics, economics, and society.
At JIME Center as well, drawing on the above knowledge, I endeavour to provide accurate and in-depth analysis, centred on Iran's economic and energy policy.
