  UN SECURITY COUNCIL LIFTS SANCTIONS ON SUDAN
 
  UNITED NATIONS, SEPT 28 (KUNA) -- THE SECURITY COUNCIL ON FRIDAY LIFTED ALL
  SANCTIONS IMPOSED ON SUDAN IN 1996, WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT, AFTER IT COMPLIED
  WITH PROVISIONS OF THE RESOLUTIONS THAT IMPOSED THEM.
  VOTING 14 IN FAVOUR, WITH ONE ABSTENTION, THE U.S., THE COUNCIL TOOK NOTE
  OF THE STEPS TAKEN BY THE KHARTOUM GOVERNMENT TO COMPLY WITH THOSE RESOLUTIONS.
  THE COUNCIL WELCOMED SUDAN'S ACCESSION TO THE RELEVANT INTERNATIONAL
  CONVENTIONS FOR ELIMINATIONS OF TERRORISM, ITS RATIFICATION OF THE 1997
  INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION FOR THE SUPPRESSION OF TERRORIST BOMBING AND ITS
  SIGNING OF THE 1999 INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION FOR THE SUPPRESSION OF FINANCING
  TERRORISM.
  THE COUNCIL ALSO TOOK NOTE OF THE COMMUNICATIONS FROM SOUTH AFRICA,
  CHAIRMAN OF THE NON-ALIGNED MOVEMENT, ALGERIA, ON BEHALF OF THE ARAB LEAGUE,
  GABON, ON BEHALF OF THE AFRICAN GROUP AND THE SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE AFRICAN
  UNITY, SUPPORTING THE MOVE.
  SUDAN WAS PUNISHED FOR FAILING TO EXTRADITE THREE MEN ACCUSED IN A PLOT TO
  ASSASINATE THE PRESIDENT OF EGYPT HOSNI MUBARAK DURING A VISIT TO ETHIOPIA.
