Yousuf bin Alawi – Statement…………..Part III,

Alawi stressed that the Gulf countries were among the first countries which had taken steps to trace and hinder the terrorist organisations from getting financial support, noting that the Sultanate and its sisterly countries had financial systems with regard to transactions which prevent terrorist organisations from receiving such support, saying that these systems existed before the recent events and without request from any party.

The Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs called upon Arab media not to run after rumours of the Western media with  regard to linking terrorism sometimes with Arabs and Muslims and which highlight what happens in the Arab occupied lands and Palestine in terms of legal resistance against the occupation as a type of terrorism.

He said Arab media should distinguish between its Arab cause and International terrorism.

On whether the GCC forthcoming summit which will be held in Muscat will focus on terrorism issue and the recent developments, he said the summit has a Gulf nature and the issue of combating terrorism was an international issue and that any international effort to combat terrorism would be in the context of the United Nations and not else where.

On his views on the causes of terrorism, Alawi said that there were several reasons that each views them differently and they are not restricted to the political side. “If we take the middle-east issue, the Arab in this region of the world and Muslims alike believe that the West had not worked to solve this problem on the basis of justice…… and this is one of the reasons which should be meticulously considered.

On the U.S. accusations to Osama bin Laden and its determination to strike his organisation and the government of Taleban which harbors him and on those who are asking for proof for U.S. accusations before it strikes Afghanistan, Alawi said that for many years the world had been hearing of Osama bin Laden’s activities and his organisation as well as his link to many events that took place in more than one region regardless of whether he was behind the recent events or not.

He added that those who were now seeking proof aimed to obstruct procedures which will not happen.

Alawi rejected the saying of those who think that the U.S. was determined to strike some Arab countries under the justification of their cooperation with terrorism, saying there is no Arab country that cooperates with bin Laden’s organisation but rather Arab countries themselves were the most affected by the acts of these organisations, thus, striking an Arab country was something improbable.

On the outcome of the current crisis on the Omani and Arab economy, the Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs said that Arab countries were part of the world which began to be affected by consequences of this issue including the decline in oil prices and its impact on economic projects.
