DEMONSTRATIONS IN JORDAN, YEMEN MARKING INTIFADA'S ANNIVERSARY

AMMAN, SEPT 28 (KUNA) -- DEMONSTRATORS TOOK TO THE STREETS FIRDAY HERE AND
IN SANAA, YEMEN, COMMEMORATING THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE ALAQSA INTIFADA.
NEARLY A 1,000 PEOPLE HERE IN THE JORDANIAN CAPITAL MARCHED IN A ONE HOUR
DEMONSTRATION SHOUTING ANTI-ISRAELI AND ANTI-AMERICAN SLOGANS. GATHERING AT
THE LARGEST PALESTINIAN REFUGEE CAMP IN JORDAN HOUSING 80,000 REFUGEES, THE
DEMONSTRATORS MARKED THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE INTIFADA BY BURNING ISRAELI
AND AMERICAN FLAGS, HOISTING PICTURES OF OSAMA BIN LADEN, AND WAVING PLACARDS
THAT READ "AMERICA IS THE MOTHER OF ALL TERRORISM".
A GROUP ORGANIZING THE DEMONSTRATION, CALLED THE NATIONAL ISLAMIC FORCES,
ISSUED A STATEMENT IT DISTRIBUTED AMONG THE DEMONSTRATORS SAYING SUCH THINGS
AS THE INTERNATIONAL COALITION TO COMBAT TERRORISM "AIMS TO FIGHT GROUPS THAT
ARE INVOLVED IN NATIONAL STRUGGLES FOR SELF-DETERMINATION."
THE DEMONSTRATION CAME AGAINST THE JORDANIAN GOVERNMENT'S BAN LAST MONTH OF
ANY PUBLIC GATHERING WITHOUT PRIOR PERMISSION.
THE SIZE OF DEMONSTRATORS WAS CONSIDERABLY LARGER IN SANAA WHERE AN
ESTIMATED CROWD OF 10,000 PEOPLE GATHERED IN THE COMMERCIAL CENTER OF THE CITY
SHOUTING ANTI-ISRAELI AND ANTI-AMERICAN SLOGANS AND URGING ARAB COUNTRIES TO
  REINSTATE ARAB BOYCOTT OF ISRAEL.
YEMENI AUTHORITIES BEEFED UP SECURITY AROUND SOME WESTERN EMBASSIES AND
SPREAD OUT RIOT CONTROL UNITS TO WARD OFF ANY UNFORESEEABLE CROWD MISBEHAVIOR.
