UAE sends emergency relief aid to Afghans

Abu Dhabi, Rajab 10/Sep 27 (IINA) – Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nhayyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, has issued instructions for the dispatch of emergency aid to the people of Afghanistan who have taken refuge in Pakistan, fearing the probable American retaliatory attacks for the attacks on New York and Washington.

The conveyance of the first lot of the aid would be undertaken by the UAE Red Crescent Society, in conjunction with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). It will consist of food materials, tents, medicines, mineral water, and the like.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al-Nhayyan, the UAE’s External Affairs Minister, who is also head of the Red Crescent Society, has said that millions of Afghans have taken refuge in neighboring countries, and are living a very trying and difficult time. He added that many more are expected to flee their country in the next coming weeks, which, he said, would make matters even worse.

In all, about six million Afghans (a quarter of the total Afghan population) have already taken refuge in neighboring countries, such as Iran, India, Tajikistan, and Pakistan, of whom nearly two and a half million are in Pakistan.

US new ambassador to Egypt sounds note of reassurance

Cairo, Rajab 10/Sep 27 (IINA) – The US’s new ambassador to Egypt, David Woolich, has said that his country’s Department of Justice has issued instructions for the punishment of anyone who is found guilty of harassing a Muslim or an Islamic organization in the country, be it a mosque, school, or Islamic Center.

Following a visit to the Sheikh of Azhar, the ambassador told IINA that there are over a billion Muslims in the world, of whom seven million are in the United States. He said these are, to all intents and purposes, Americans and are treated as such. He added: “ I’ve been assured by the Azhar Sheikh that Islam was a religion of tolerance and that it was against the use of violence.”

The ambassador went on to say: “We value the Muslims, and President Bush just recently paid a visit to the Washington Islamic Center.” He said that American was involved in a war with terrorists, whatever their religious inclination, and was not in any way targeting Muslims.

He said the US wants the Taliban to hand over Bin Laden and his followers in the country, but that the Taliban have not, as yet, cooperated and met this request.
