MEETS WITH MUSLIM-AMERICAN LEADERS WASHINGTON, SEP. 27, SPA-- PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH MET WITH LEADERS OF THE MUSLIM-AMERICAN COMMUNITY YESTERDAY AT THE WHITE HOUSETO DISCUSS PROPOSALS FOR RAISING TOLERANCE AND AWARENESS OF ISLAM IN AMERICA. SINCE THE TERRORIST ATTACKS ON THE PENTAGON AND THE WORLD TRADE CENTER ON SEPTEMBER 11TH, HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH, A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION COMMITTED TO ENSURING EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL HUMANS WORLDWIDE, STATED IT HAS RECEIVED REPORTS OF 'SEVERAL HUNDRED' RETALIATORY INCIDENTS AGAINST MUSLIM-AMERICANS, INCLUDING MURDER, ASSAULT, PROPERTY DAMAGE, AND VERBAL HARASSMENT. 'I HAVE TOLD THE NATION MORE THAN ONCE THAT OURS IS A WAR AGAINST EVIL, AGAINST EXTREMISTS' BUSH SAID, '(AND) THAT THE TEACHINGS OF ISLAM ARE TEACHINGS OF PEACE AND GOOD.' HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT AL QAEDA IS AN ORGANIZATION OF EVIL, AND THAT THERE IS 'NO RELIGIOUS JUSTIFICATION FOR WHAT (BIN LADEN) HAS IN MIND.' FURTHERMORE, BUSH PRAISED THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY FOR ITS CONTRIBUTIONS AND SUPPORT DURING THE EARLY PHASES OF AMERICA'S CAMPAIGN AGAINST TERRORISM. 'THE OUTPOURING OF SUPPORT HAS COME FROM ALL CORNERS OF THE COUNTRY, INCLUDING MANY MEMBERS OF THE MUSLIMFAITH, AND FOR THAT I AM GRATEFUL,' BUSH SAID.---SPA | ||||||
