By Arieh O'Sullivan | September, 16 2001 |
Army forces launched a four-hour incursion into Ramallah following an ambush
on an Israeli car in northern Jerusalem which killed one Israeli man late last
night.
The army said that its troops entered the southern sectors of the
Palestinian-controlled city in retaliation for the ambush on the road between
Jerusalem's French Hill and Ramot neighborhoods.
The raid by IDF tanks
and infantry came under very heavy light arms fire from the Palestinians. IAF
Apache helicopters also participated in the raid, according to reports. The army
said a number of arrests were made, reportedly of key fugitives. The IDF
withdrew before dawn.
The Palestinians reported at least one security
man, Ali al-Yaseany, 26,was killed.
Dozens of others were wounded in the
strike. They also reported that some IDF tanks penetrated all the way to the
Palestinian Legislative Council building, a symbol of Palestinian autonomy.
Israeli forces arrested a few Palestinians in the operation, the army
said.
Israel Radio reported Palestinian sources as saying the IDF had
attempted to reach the Palestinian TV and radio broadcasting studios, but
failed.
